Blossoms, May (Ricoh GR III)

The cherry blossoms (and those from similar trees, as I have made no attempt to determine the species of tree in this instance) are succumbing to the warmer weather and coastal wind here, so I decided to take a few last photos. I’ve been testing the black and white abilities of the Ricoh GR III, and, rather than try and capture the tonality of the blossoms against the ground or trees, I leaned into the “Are-Bure-Boke” style that photographers like Daido Moriyama developed, and which the little Ricoh definitely caters to with its hi-contrast monotone mode. I liked that mode a lot in the GR II, and, while it’s a little different in this camera, the added customization allowed me to really lean into the style. Not your usual way of photographing flowers, but I thought it fitting for the tail end of the season.
